What is Carboxytherapy?

Carboxytherapy is the process of accelerating circulation and regional tissue metabolism by injecting Carbon Dioxide (CO2) gas under the skin for therapeutic purposes. CO2 gas has been used in medicine since 1930 (at Royat thermals, France) until today. The treatment is considered a quick, comfortable, effective, and non-surgical method. Carboxytherapy is particularly recognized as an extremely effective method in cellulite treatment.

How is Carboxytherapy performed?

  • While the application is extremely simple, it is based on the principle of injecting carbon dioxide gas into subcutaneous tissue using a 30G (0.3 mm) needle. The injected gas is absorbed by nearby tissue.

  • Vascular dilation in subcutaneous microcirculation increases
  • Capillary blood flow increases and accelerates
  • Fat-burning (lipolytic) effect occurs
  • Oxygen utilization potential in superficial tissues increases
  • Regulation of water retention is achieved (through elimination of excess water)

How does carbon dioxide create an effect?

Carbon dioxide has two effects: First is the mechanical fat-burning (lipolytic) effect, and the other is the capillary-dilating (capillary vasodilation) effect in the region. Dilation of capillaries enables more oxygen transport to the area and removal of fluid within the tissue. Thus, edema is resolved, fat is broken down, and tissue gains a younger and firmer appearance.

Is the procedure painful?

Some patients may feel a slight ache in injection areas. This usually doesn't last more than a few seconds. Due to increased circulation, a mild warming sensation may occur for 10-20 minutes.

What should be avoided after treatment?

Bathing, swimming, and sauna are not recommended for 4 hours after treatment. During periods following treatment, local trauma should be avoided for half an hour. Otherwise, people can continue their activities.

How many sessions are required for treatment?

Although it varies, an average of 10-20 sessions is needed for removing cellulite. The number of sessions is proportional to the degree and extent of cellulite. Applications can be done once or twice a week, or every other day. Each session lasts about 10-15 minutes.

After how many sessions is improvement seen?

You will notice healthy development in your body after an average of 4-5 sessions. After 8-10 applications, you will see that your subcutaneous tissue has thinned and your tissue has tightened. Later, you'll have the chance to observe how your cellulite decreases and disappears.

How long does the treatment effect last?

This depends entirely on you. If you follow an appropriate diet and exercise, this effect can last for years. If you choose a lifestyle conducive to cellulite formation, you'll notice your cellulite reforming within 6-7 months. However, 3-5 sessions of carboxytherapy during this period will restore your skin to a healthy appearance.

Is carbon dioxide a toxic gas?

No. CO2 gas is a colorless, odorless gas and is one of the final metabolic wastes in living organisms. Our body produces approximately 200 ml of CO2 per minute in a resting environment. This amount can increase up to 10 times during physical exercise. We exhale this gas that we produce in tissues through our lungs. For these reasons, carboxytherapy has no significant side effects. Sometimes slight bruising may occur at injection sites, but this effect is temporary. In medicine, carbon dioxide gas is also used in high volumes to inflate the abdomen in "laparoscopy" surgeries, also known as closed surgery.

Who should not undergo carboxytherapy?

  • Pregnant women
  • Nursing mothers
  • Those with advanced insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus
  • Those with coagulation disorders (such as Hemophilia)
  • Those with Acute Thromboembolism
  • Those who have had acute thrombophlebitis
  • Cancer patients
  • Those with advanced heart disease
  • In high blood pressure
  • In gangrene
  • In those who have had stroke and ischemic attacks
  • Carboxytherapy is not recommended for those with severe renal failure.

I started my education at Özel Ayas College (Adana/Turkey) in 1987 and then studied at Özel Adana American College between 1988-1994. I entered Çukurova University Faculty of Medicine in 1995 and graduated in 2001. After my medical education, I specialized in mesotherapy by completing my training at Enseinement International de Mesotherapie in Paris in 2004.

Since 2005, I have been providing services in the field of aesthetic and medical applications at Dr. Zeki Otan DALYAN Medical Aesthetics & Laser Clinic, which I founded in Adana.
